John Angel
Michael
John Angel has devoted his whole life to studying the great
tradition of western painting, and has spent the recent years of his
life reviving it. It was John who took me from a draftsman to a painter.
He challenged ideas I had and taught me what separates the art
of painting from merely copying nature, an idea which has defined my
approach to painting ever since.
While most of my other mentors come from the great pool of Chicago
illustrators, Michael John Angel was part of Pietro
Annigoni's painting studio in the 1960's.
Michael John Angel's teaching is as insightful as it is rare. His knowledge
of painting is encyclopedic, built up from decades of experience. His
instillation of the academic system created
the environment for my training that brought me through my most recent
period of growth.
